History (Origins)

Miyazome is said to trace its roots back to the Edo Period (1600–1868), when dyers relocated to areas near the Tagawa River in order to dye the cotton materials produced in the thriving cotton-growing region of Moka.

Characteristics (Techniques and Materials)

Each piece of material is dyed with the utmost care: paste, wax, and so forth are used to create patterns on refined fabrics and chemical dyes used for chusen, shinsen, hikizome, and other dyeing approaches.
