The craft of gold glazing was introduced from China during the Muromachi period (14th to mid-16th centuries), and techniques were established during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (late 16th century) that continue to this day.
Kimonos and folding screens are decorated with a variety of colors using gold and silver foil, or metal powder. Delicate designs using a wide variety of techniques such as "furihaku" (shredded foil) and "kirihaku" (cut foil) are characteristic of this craft.
