A pottery was established in the town surrounding the feudal Mito Domain's castle and Koisago-area potter's clay used as the base ingredient to make the first Koisago-yaki. Later on, Ogane Hikosaburo built his own pottery kiln.
The use of gold crystal for yellow patterns across the piece, cinnabar for pink hues and other such design features imbue the simple overall appearance with refined coloring.
