History (Origins)

The 216th paragraph of the Tsurezuregusa, a famous collection of essays, notes that around the year 1250 (during the Kamakura Period), Ashikaga Yoshiuji sent a gift of "Ashikaga-dyed items" to the shogunate's regent Hojo Tokiyori. Therefore, it is believed that this type of dyeing was already being carried out at that time.

Characteristics (Techniques and Materials)

Kusaki-zome is characterized by its elegantly simple texture achieved through the use of natural plant dyes (kariyasu, Purple Gromwell, Amur cork tree, etc.).
