History (Origins)

These screens were first made in Meiji 40 (1907) during the agricultural off-season, when high quality reeds began to grow wild on abandoned village land.

Characteristics (Techniques and Materials)

We use reeds from the Watarase-yusuichi area, which was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in July, Heisei 24 (2012). Compared to reeds produced in other countries, they are better looking, stronger, and longer lasting.
