Nobotoke (Buddha statues displayed along rural paths and roads), jizo (Ksitigarbha bodhisattva) statues and other Nogi-no-sekibutsu were made during the Edo Period (1600–1868).
These Buddha statues come in a wide variety of styles and forms, including those with silky-smooth surfaces, those with visible marks left on the surface from hand-carving, and many others.
