Mashiko Kusaki-zome was started in the town of Mashiko-machi during the Kansei Era (1789–1801).
The use of indigo, crimson, madder, and other such dyes results in products that are simplistic yet possess a delicate beauty and depth.
Mashiko Kusaki-zome has been designated by the Tochigi prefectural government as an intangible cultural property.
