History (Origins)

During the construction of Nikko's Toshogu Shrine, numerous craftspeople from throughout Japan came together and shared their wisdom, which was then combined with high-quality Nikko cedar materials to make these craft products.

Characteristics (Techniques and Materials)

Fine-cut Kiso cypress, Akita cedar, Nikko cedar, and other wood materials are assembled in geometric patterns.
These works, which include shoin shoji (paper sliding doors/partitions), ranma (transoms) and other interior installations and elements, achieve beautiful expression through intricate plant patterns and other such designs.
