History (Origins)

The unique construction techniques used to produce these items represent Japan's best, passed down from artisans of the past who utilized them to create the famous Yomeimon Gate at Nikko's Toshogu Shrine among other famous works.

Characteristics (Techniques and Materials)

Following a painstaking selection process, these portable shrines are assembled almost entirely without the use of nails. Like their Shinto counterparts from the Edo Period (1600–1868), they are complex and sturdy while achieving a lavish and gorgeous beauty.
