History (Origins)

Shimotsuke-shibori is said to have been transmitted to Shimotsuke Province by Yuge no Dokyo during the Nara Period (710–94).

Characteristics (Techniques and Materials)

The graceful twisted-paper patterns created through hand-processing confer a fabric-like physical texture combined with an appearance similar to that of wood or leather. The materials are durable and their colors resist fading.
