History (Origins)

Deep indigo dyeing is believed to have been started during the Bunka-Bunsei Eras (1804–29) by the first-generation of the Koya Shinbeh dyer's shop in the Yashu-Kurobane area.

Characteristics (Techniques and Materials)

These products are characterized by their rich indigos that resist fading. This is made possible thanks to the use of preliminary indigo-dyeing utilizing shoen-sumi dye, a high-quality mixture of soybean paste and burnt pine tree root.
