History (Origins)

The Hogushi-ori single-cloth weaving method is believed to have been first conceived of by Kanai Shigenojo of Awadani-go Village in Ashikaga-gun sometime during the Meiwa or An'ei Era (between 1764 and 1772).

Characteristics (Techniques and Materials)

The design is printed on the warp (longitudinal threads), after which the weft (lateral threads) are weaved across, giving the final pattern a sense of three-dimensional depth.
